Electronic waste, including its informal recycling and disposal in landfills, poses a high environmental risk for MED (Mediterranean) countries as it is responsible for the release of hazardous substances into groundwater, affecting water sources, aquifers and seawater.
eWaster aims to find solutions that do not present electronic waste as a source of environmental damage, but rather as an opportunity to create an innovative sustainable economy through the recovery of this waste.
The project aims to promote local and regional policies for better management of electronic waste, reduce the environmental damage caused by this waste in the selected areas and, at the same time, promote innovative business models based on the conversion of the electricity and electronics (E&E) sector, currently linear, into a sustainable circular model.
The unification of waste management criteria in the Mediterranean transnational area (MED) is essential, as it will make it difficult to boost the illegal movement of electronic waste from areas with stricter regulation to areas with more permissive regulation. eWaster brings together 11 partners and 14 associates in tandems of technical and political bodies, covering 6 Member States of the European Union (EU) and 1 beneficiary country of the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (Bosnia and Herzegovina), which will approve 10 new Action Plans for e-waste management, covering the main recommendations of the “Circular Electronic Initiative” of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.
