Worldwide, the Creative Video Game Industry is currently the main economic driver, with more than 2.5 million people around the world playing regularly. It is estimated that by 2023 the video game industry will exceed 200 billion dollars, surpassing the film industry and music streaming and album sales worldwide.
In Portugal, the production and marketing of games is still under development, so it does not have global notoriety. Human resources trained in Portugal have high skills for the development of this topic, so it is important to create means to retain professionals in the area, in order to boost the video game industry in Portugal.
The consortium covers the country from Évora to Lisbon, Madeira and the Azores, bringing together companies, private and public entities, national and international R&D centers, in order to create a cluster specialized in the development of video games and complementary services. With R&D activities ranging from TRL3-4 to TRL 5-7, capacity building and training activities, as well as marketing and internationalization, the eGames Lab will be an organization open to the entire Portuguese community of the creative industries, generating PPS with high global market value.
The consortium has the formal backing of key industry leaders such as Sony Playstation, Dell’s Alienware and Singapore’s EnjinStarter Launchpad. The consortium will also work with the prestigious University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and the famous HitLab (one of the best Virtual Reality labs in the world).
The Agenda focuses on the development of the following areas:
- Blockchain-based framework for gaming;
- Advanced Virtual and Augmented Reality for games;
- Transformational Games for Health and the Green Agenda;
- Artificial Intelligence for Interactive Storytelling;
- Pre-Market Ecosystem Development;
Main objective:
The eGames Lab will develop research and investigation in the areas of Blockchain and Artificial Intelligence, User Interaction, VR/AR, and Psychology and Cognition. In addition, the project includes support and certified training for developers, managers and designers for the development of digital content. It is also important to publicize and promote the gaming cluster through digital marketing and organization/participation in events such as International Fairs, Hackathons and Conferences.
