First of four new PACT buildings inaugurated

9 May 2022

The European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, the Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, and the Rector of the University of Évora, Ana Costa Freitas, today unveiled the inauguration plaque of the first of four new PACT buildings, the Centro Infante Dom Henrique.

The objective of this new space, which will integrate a laboratory and spaces dedicated to research, is to contribute to improving the scientific excellence of the cross-border cooperation area (Andalusia, Alentejo and Algarve).

The Centre, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg Spain-Portugal Programme (POCTEP) 2014-2020, is the first of four new buildings that are part of the PACT expansion project, developed by the architect Carrilho da Graça. There will be another 6100m2 and an investment of almost 9 million euros.

“Companies are increasingly looking to the Alentejo as a winning option to develop their business and the expansion of our facilities responds to this growing demand that is taking place”, says Soumodip Sarkar, Executive President of PACT.

Sarkar reinforces that it is “expected” that the new buildings will allow PACT to host “about 60 new companies”, mainly linked to the areas of Aeronautics, Circular Economy, Industry 4.0 and Health Technologies.

The construction process of the remaining three buildings is already underway, and is in the proposal analysis phase. Financed by the Alentejo 2020 Operational Program, they have a base value of 4.9 million euros and an execution forecast of 420 days.
