13 December 2023

On December 12th, the closing session and awards ceremony of the CHAT DIVE HACKATHON took place at PACT, a pioneering event in Alentejo with regard to competitions in the area of technology and innovation. The session aimed to make known the projects created within the scope of the activity and distinguish the winning groups, based on the appreciation of experts in the areas of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Informatics and Artificial Intelligence.

The projects, which consist of apps that seek to respond to a specific Digital Health problem and make use of the integration of ChatGPT, were developed on the 6th and 7th, from 08:00 am to 20:00 pm at PACT. In these 2 days, the groups of participants had the technical support of 3 mentors, specialists in the areas of Digital Health, Informatics and Artificial Intelligence and who are part of the DECSIS team, the company that organized the event in partnership with PACT.

The opening of the session featured speeches by Soumodip Sarkar, Executive President of PACT, and Artur Romão, Development and Innovation Director at DECSIS and also a juror.

The four groups of the competition, consisting of 2 to 3 people, presented their projects to the jury, composed of: Paulo Quaresma, Vice-Rector at the University of Évora, Artur Romão, José Saias, Professor at the Department of Informatics at the University of Évora, João Moreira Pires, Incubators & Accelerator’s Booster at Startup Portugal, and Fernando Domingues, Head Portugal of the International Association of Artificial Intelligence.

Given the feedback to the participants, who were mostly attending Higher Education at the University of Évora, the panel of judges deliberated and decided the winning groups of the challenge. The app distinguished with the 1st place sought to identify and monitor patients suffering from sequelae associated with meningitis, receiving a technological voucher of 1000 euros; the app distinguished with the 2nd place aimed to respond to the increase in the number of Alentejo people who seek to treat alcohol dependence, receiving a technological voucher of 600 euros; and the app distinguished with the 3rd place sought to contribute to reducing the premature mortality rate in Alentejo, receiving a technological voucher of 300 euros.

“The CHAT DIVE HACKATHON is an activity that is part of the commitment that PACT has been making in the digital and technological training of young people. With this type of initiative, we want to promote their training in these areas and help them prepare for entry into the job market. The Alentejo has more and more professional opportunities to offer, the PACT ecosystem shows that, so the goal is for these young people to settle here, in the same place where they have already created a connection and have been given valuable learning opportunities throughout their school and academic career”, explained Soumodip Sarkar, Executive President of PACT.

The session also featured comments from the 3 mentors of the challenge: Carmen Garcia, nurse and researcher in the “ALICE” project, a partnership between DECSIS and the University of Évora, and author of the page “the imperfect mother”, which has more than 190 thousand followers on Facebook, Nuno Carriço, AI Solutions Architect, and Pedro Grilo, Software Engineer, both at DECSIS.
