PACT hosts first meeting of the international eWAsTER project

17 April 2024

PACT hosted yesterday the first meeting of eWAsTER, which marked the official start of work on this international project. Funded by the European Union, through the Interreg Euro-MED program, eWAsTER – whose name originates from the message “Preventing e-waste from polluting MED water by turning waste into a resource” – is a direct response to the worrying low recycling rate of electronic waste in the Mediterranean region.

As the project leader, PACT received its partners, representatives from 8 countries in the Mediterranean area, for a working session that served to define responsibilities, review the general lines of the project and approve the first operational documents.

Soumodip Sarkar, Executive President of PACT, and Tiago Teotónio Pereira, executive member of the Directive Committee of the Managing Authority of the Alentejo Regional Operational Program, were some of the figures who, in the morning, were present at the meeting.

During the afternoon, the partners visited the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation for a wine tasting, getting to know the region better.

The project aims to promote local and regional policies for a more effective management of electronic waste, reducing its environmental damage in the selected areas and fostering innovative business models based on the transition of the electrical and electronic sector from a linear model to a sustainable circular model.

eWAsTER brings together 11 partners and 14 associates, in a network of technical and political bodies. The partnership covers 6 Member States of the European Union and includes Bosnia and Herzegovina as a beneficiary country of the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA)

The harmonization of waste management criteria in the Mediterranean area is one of the key points of the project, aiming to discourage the illegal movement of electronic waste between areas with different regulations.

The project also aims to not only address current problems, but also create a legacy of sustainable practices for future generations.
