PACT promotes Intellectual Property support services with the inauguration of the AlentEdge Office

10 May 2024

Intellectual Property (IP) today plays a role of enormous relevance in business and to help the entire Alentejo region to evolve and protect itself in this area, PACT launched this week the AlentEdge Office. The inauguration took place on May 8, at the PACT facilities – Alentejo Science and Technology Park.

The AlentEdge Office aims to boost economic development in the region by providing specialized services, aimed at the PACT ecosystem, namely to entrepreneurs, researchers and other entities. And the first services available are in terms of Intellectual Property (IP), developed in collaboration with INVENTA.

Soumodip Sarkar, Executive President of PACT, opened the session by presenting the office and its objectives. This was followed by the interventions of Luís Caixinhas, Patent Engineer at INVENTA, and Susana Armário, Head of the Department of External Relations of the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), who highlighted the importance of valuing knowledge through IP registration.

The representatives of the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) of the region, Paulo Quaresma, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Internationalization of the University of Évora, Luís Loures, President of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, João Carlos Martins, Pro-President for the area of research and cooperation of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja and João Moutão, President of the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, participated in a debate on the latest developments in the field of IP, as well as the challenges and opportunities. The conversation was moderated by Tiago Teotónio Pereira, executive member of the Board of Directors of the Managing Authority of the Alentejo 2030 Regional Operational Program, who also closed the session.

The office will also allow PACT, through the knowledge of inventions and the R&D to be carried out in the region, especially the research carried out at the University of Évora and the Polytechnic Institutes of Santarém, Portalegre and Beja, to increase the level of technology transfer.

AlentEdge’s physical office, located at PACT’s facilities, allows to increase the capacity for intervention and application of IP, in addition to bringing local stakeholders closer and raising awareness of its advantages.

This is an initiative that arises from the commitment of PACT as the leader of the Regional Technology Transfer System (SRTT) and in partnership with CCDR-A, co-responsible for the operational coordination of the implementation of the Alentejo Regional Strategy for Smart Specialization (PR Alentejo 2030).
